THE ILIAS LALAOUNIS JEWELRY MUSEUM

The Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum (ILJM) is the first museum devoted to the art of Jewelry in Greece and one of three of its kind in the world. It is a not for profit cultural organisation that acts as an international center for the study and promotion of decorative and traditional crafts with an emphasis on Jewelry.

Located under the sacred hill of the Acropolis, and just a stone’s throw away from the Acropolis museum, the permanent collection of the ILJM includes contemporary historic Jewelry, while temporary exhibitions display decorative arts from the 17th century onwards from important museum collections, as well as from private and artists’ collections. The core of the permanent collection highlights 50 collections by Ilias Lalaounis between 1940- 2002. They are inspired by a range of themes such as the history of art from the prehistoric period until the Renaissance with an emphasis on ancient Greek art, nature, and modern technology.

The mission of the museum is not just to preserve and exhibit Jewelry and decorative arts, but also to inspire new creations. In its renovated spaces the museum offers tours catered to individuals, visitor groups and School groups. Educational school and cultural programs are renewed yearly presenting new insights on cultural education and contemporary Jewelry techniques. The research library, the video rooms, the museum shop and the coffee shop are accessible daily to offer both children and adults a variety of facilities with Tours, Lectures, and Workshops on related themes.
